Napoleon, second album - Magpies - Out Now!

I’m ecstatic to say that I’ve finally finished my second solo album entitled Magpies, and it’s available HERE!

A little history of the album, including some waffle:

Magpies has been a real labour of love, and to be honest it’s been quite nerve-wracking, for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it’s genuinely something that I think reflects a more emotional, personal side of my work. And as much as I pride myself in “being in touch with my feelings” and trusting my own musical judgement, I feel like I’ve taken a leap with this album, and presented something much more from the heart, and more honest.

Secondly, I wanted to do this without a label. I’m still working alongside labels and had a few interested in this, but I decided to just be myself and give it directly to the audience myself. It’s a very rewarding experience that I never got whilst working in Bent, because I was in a duo behind a large publisher and label with a marketing machine.

That’s not to say that I don’t want to use PR/Labels with my work; my new side project Pincer Movement is doing just that.

Speaking of Pincer Movement, if you don’t know about it already, it is a new collaboration of mine with local Irish DJ/Promoter/House bod Stephen Porter, who I met after I moved here, due to seeing his festivals and noticing the talent he was bringing into this remote area with his Jika Jika festivals!

I soon realised after my first Napoleon album that in a way, I wanted to split my music output in half. I felt like I was trying to cross too many genres with one moniker, and not that that’s a bad thing, but I sometimes believe it’s easier for people to understand a body of work when it’s more unified.

So, the idea was to put my emotional, personal music out as Napoleon, and my disco/house type material out as something else.

I clicked with Mr Porter very quickly, and his taste in house music was perfectly in line with what I loved. And so Pincer Movement was born… so it you miss some of the more uptempo work I did on my debut solo album, fear not… As I type this, a second EP as PM is about to launch, this time through Godlike & Electric, and it’s getting a fab response.

Anyhow, I’m waffling. This is about Magpies. Some are saying it reminds them of early Bent which I think I agree with. I wanted to return to finding vintage beautiful samples, on cassettes, vinyl, and wherever I could lay my hands on. I wanted this to have a melancholy, but hopeful feel to it.

“Magpies?” you may be asking… well, I’m a bit of a sonic thief, and for some reason in the remote beautiful area of Ireland where I now reside, there seem to be loads of them hanging around the road outside my house.

Also, “Magpie” was a 70s show in the UK. And this album has hints of the 70s in it. But I just thought of that off the top of my head.

Well, I’ll end this waffle. Enjoy :D

Napoleon - The Remixed EP

Well, after a long silence Napoleon – The Remixed EP is finally here!

It’s been a hectic 2013 – Bent releases, Pincer Movement, and trying to finally nail this second Napoleon album.. (It’s getting close)

Anyhow, here it is – it contains 4 fab mixes from Ralph Myerz, Nacho Marco, Sonic Tramp and Miracle Boy!

Sonic Tramp was the winner of my remix competition, and here is the result – a gorgeous rendition of ‘Lament’

Enjoy!

What's been going on!

In case you think I’ve been quiet… I have, but I’ve been working!

It’s been a busy start to 2012 [edit OOPS! 2013… my brain doesn’t know the year] – I’m rounding up the second Napoleon album, finishing more Pincer Movement tracks, been finishing 5 remixes….

To top it off I’ve been working with Nail to get these two Bent “From The Archives” volumes mastered and ready for release!

It’s a very exciting start to a year….

Oh, did I say that there’ll be some choice remixes of Napoleon coming out on an EP soon too?

I’ll fill you in soon!

Cheers :D
