Bent: Weekly download of unreleased nuggets and lost gems

We’ve been blessed with a devout and warm following that has genuinely kept us going over the years. There’s been a lot of love round these parts. We love each other, we love you, and hopefully you love us. So, after a lot of thought and consideration, we’ve decided over the next few weeks to give away some of the treasure in our vaults – Bent material that has never been heard by anyone except of course our closest friends and family. Stuff that had our manager, Nick on the phone laughing, but still loving.. It’s time for you to hear even more of what makes Bent bent.

When we released the ‘Best Of’ compilation back in 2009, we actually gave away a few then, but funnily we’re still sitting on more. A LOT more!

We actually have a ton of material. My vault says I have about 300 Bent tracks in it, running up to a day in solid listening time. Some of it is extremely daft, some we would regard as pretty bad. There’s early versions of tracks, instrumentals, sketches, remixes that were never accepted/finished and more… but collectively, it really gives a massive indication of where Nail and I were coming from, and on that basis alone we thought it would be great for people to hear even more from our little universe; we thought it was about time that we let listeners into our laundry basket to have a good rummage to hear the full true Bent!

So over the following mondays (once a week at 10am GMT to be precise) I’ll be uploading these little beauts right here on this blog via soundcloud…I’ve even made a date in my calendar with an alarm activated (as I can be a bit forgetful) so set your reminders with me in as we step through the keyhole…. (insert crappy-cheap-daytime-TV-wobbly-back-in-time-effect)

See you about this time tomorrow, then! :-)

Facebook requests (and my new album)

I recently asked the facebook.com/bentworld group what they would like to see uploaded to the site. What came back was very encouraging. Gigs, dates, new material, inspiration, and blog type stuff came back as requests..

..Well, this VERY unused blog may be the place to do this.

The problem you see, is that most of the time I’m either making music, listening to music, playing around, or drinking. Like a lot of musicians I know, writing about what one does can sometimes seem like a chore. To upkeep facebook, websites, twitter, myspace, youtube – takes a lot of personal time and effort; so I do apologise if these updates are slow! I just love making stuff too much to be updating sites all the time!

Well, here’s the good news. My Napoleon album is done, the artwork is done, and very shortly it will see itself on iTunes, and as a CD release. I’ve passed it to some good friends and had positive remarks. I’ve also had negative remarks, but this will always be the way, won’t it! When I was in Bent, people disliked certain tracks and liked others.. and I suppose the variety of music we wrote meant that there was usually something that someone would get into.. well, the Napoleon album is a little bit like this…it’s quite varied, but it has a thread of me weaving through it.

To be honest, this album’s been a long time coming. The reason being is that I spent a few years outside of Bent working with other singers on little projects. Lots of dramas, and unsavoury characters. Massive distractions of stress! The opposite of what I’m used to with Bent..! Then I moved house, country and studio. I finally managed to move to the middle of nowhere so I could concentrate on finishing stuff, and hey presto, I’ve got an album done. Also though, it’s also simply that I’m a perfectionist. Not that the album is perfect. But I do really live, eat, shit and dream music. And making my own stuff is almost like crafting a child, to me. So I’ve been nurturing it. It’s finally a teenager, and I’m kicking it out of the house!

If you’re interested, there’s a few tracks posted up on www.soundcloud.com/simon-mills – a little taster of what’s to come… amongst other tunes etc!

It’s very influenced by cassette tape findings, as well as the usual vinyl samples etc. And I didn’t hold back this time; I’ve really sampled a hell of a lot, as well as gone through my HUGE archive of own samples etc. I love tape though. You can’t just skip through it. You have to listen. And it just reminds me of the days when I’d go on holiday with a bag full to the brim with tapes without their boxes, all smashing and breaking… but I had to take them all. Something about the convenience of digital media has ruined the magic of physical music.. going and finding something, or having to own something..but I’m also very glad we’ve moved on.. I love the convenience myself…

Well, I’m very excited about releasing this.

…well, you should go and listen to the tracks on my soundcloud, and click on the ‘follow’ button, since I’ll be chucking loads more up there… and if you like it, tell your friends. I’m relying on you to tell the world that there’s a “Post Bent” album coming! haha!

I’ll post up some influences soon… and what I’ve been listening to…..

Cheerio!
